Big Wilson Falls consists of several waterfalls and is one of the most accessible waterfalls in Maine. No hiking required, just some back roads to drive on, then park near the bridge, walk down the hill on the right side of the falls and enjoy! Although none of the falls are very tall, the falls have been beautiful every time I’ve visited, especially in autumn.
There are several large rocks you can walk on as well as a small beach. Big Wilson Falls is an excellent place for a picnic and great for a quick dip after a hike on nearby Borestone Mountain or Little Wilson Falls. The falls are in direct sunlight so if you’ll be taking long exposure photographs, it’s best to avoid visiting in the middle of the day unless its cloudy.
Directions to Big Wilson Falls
If you’re coming from the Moosehead Lake Region, on Route 15 in Monson, take a left onto Elliotsville Rd, drive 8.2 miles, and Big Wilson Falls is located to the right of the bridge. You can park on the side of the road, or park in the small lot on the Campground Rd, a small dirt road just before the bridge. If you’re coming from the Bangor region, take Route 15 toward Moosehead Lake and turn right on Guilford Center Rd, 0.9 miles after the covered bridge. After 4.3 miles, turn right on Rt 150 and continue through Willimantic for 5.8 miles to the bridge on your left. Use the map above to get the best directions to Big Wilson Falls from any direction.
